    Baseline Information

    Poverty in Tanzania

As of 2021, according to the IMF, Tanzania’s gross domestic product (GDP) was an estimated $71 billion (nominal), or $218.5 billion on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis. GDP per capita (PPP) was $3,574. [1]

The economy of Tanzania is a lower-middle-income economy that is overwhelmingly dependent on agriculture. Tanzania’s economy has been transitioning from a command economy to a market economy since 1985. Although total GDP has increased since these reforms began, GDP per capita dropped sharply at first, and only exceeded the pre-transition figure in around 2007. [2]

Approximately 68 percent of Tanzania’s 61.1 million citizens live below the poverty line of $1.25 a day. 32 percent of the population are malnourished. [3]

Trends in poverty alleviation in Tanzania vary greatly between urban and rural areas in which about 70% of Tanzania’s population dwells. Endowments play a large part in distributing economic growth unevenly, with urban households having better access to infrastructure, health services, and education. Migratory trends towards urbanization, which have risen from “5.6% in 1967 to 29.1% in 2012,” are only increasing the inequality. [4]

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the most prominent challenges Tanzania faces in poverty reduction are unsustainable harvesting of its natural resources, unchecked cultivation, climate change and water-source encroachment.
