Meaning of women empowerment

Women’s empowerment can be defined to promoting women’s sense of self-worth, their ability to determine their own choices, and their right to influence social change for themselves and others.

Types or dimensions of women empowerment

There are six types or dimensions of women empowerment namely; psychological, community, organizational, economic, social and cultural.

1. Psychological empowerment enhances individual’s consciousness, belief in self-efficacy, awareness and knowledge of problems and solutions and of how individuals can address problems that harm their quality of life. This dimension aims to create self-confidence and give women the skills to acquire knowledge.
2. Community empowerment focuses on enhancing the community through leadership development, improving communication, and creating a network of support to mobilize the community to address concerns.
3. Organizational empowerment aims to create a base of resources for a community, including voluntary organizations, unions and associations that aim to protect, promote and advocate for the powerless.
4. Economic empowerment teaches entrepreneurial skills, how to take ownership of their assets and how to have income security.
5. Social empowerment teaches women about social inclusion and literacy as well as helping women find the resources to be proactive in their communities.
6. Cultural empowerment aims to recreate cultural practices and redefine cultural rules and norms for women.

Through these dimensions of empowerment, the Sustainability in action (SiA) projects works on empowering women in one or more aspects of their lives.

The Women’s Empowerment Principles

Created in a collaboration between the UN Global Compact and UN Women, the Women’s Empowerment Principles are used to empower women in the marketplace, workplace and community.

The seven Principles are:

• Principle 1: Create high-level corporate leadership for gender equality
• Principle 2: Treat all people fairly at work, respecting and supporting non-discrimination and human rights
• Principle 3: Ensure the health, wellbeing and safety of all workers, whether male or female
• Principle 4: Promote education, training and professional development for women
• Principle 5: Implement supply chain, marketing practices and enterprise development that empower women
• Principle 6: Champion equality through community initiatives and advocacy
• Principle 7: Measure and report publicly on progress to create gender equality

SiA Strategies of women empowerment

SiA recommends the following ways or strategies to facilitate women social, educational, economic, political, and psychological empowerment for their sustainable social and economic development

Strategy #1: Promote innovation of social, educational, economic, political, and psychological women empowerment projects

➠ Design and implement projects that focus on women empowerment
➠ Conduct training and facilitation sessions
➠ Induce collaboration with other national and international organizations with interest in women empowerment

Strategy #2: Facilitate women social, educational, economic, political, and psychological empowerment

➠ Provide technical support to women in their social and economic development issues
➠ Link women and development stakeholders
➠ Help women to access and to take advantage of social and economic opportunities

 Strategy #3: Promote innovation of gender-based development initiatives for women

➠ Design and implement projects that focus on women and gender
➠ Conduct training and facilitation sessions
➠ Induce collaboration with other national and international organizations with interest in gender and development
